ABOUT CN

HISTORY In 1972 Bishop Ryan opened a Satellite campus in the upstairs of St. Francis Xavier elementary school which had many portables and taught approximately 200 students. Realizing this was an awkward situation the board opted to open a new Catholic high school in the east Hamilton/Stoney Creek area. This school was Cardinal Newman Catholic Secondary School. Cardinal Newman opened in September of 1975 as a school to 250 some students in the building at 30 Cromwell Crescent. At this time former Bishop Ryan principal Fr. Cote took over the principal ship of CN and our school was officially opened to the public. The school quickly grew in population and by 1989 the school had grown to an amazing 1500 students. At this time there were actually more students outside the school in "portables" then inside. At this time the board decided that this was unacceptable and decided to split the school into two campuses. Cardinal Newman East Campus took over the building previously owned by Winona High and the school on Cromwell became Cardinal Newman West Campus. Students and staff struggled for ten long years to commute between campuses on their lunch hours and after school and finally in 1998 a dream came true. It was announced that the old Saltfleet high school on Gray Road would be demolished and a new Cardinal Newman would be built allowing both campuses to become one once again.

THE NEW NEWMAN On January 10 2000 Newman staff and students realized a dream come true when we finally moved into our new campus. Now both schools were united as one and all 1400 students together. We now have a beautiful 180 square foot building housing 3 gyms with a viewing gallery, a weight room, a fully capable video studio from which we broadcast our video announcements, 3 auto bays, a cafeteria, and a beautiful forum area. In the words of Mr. Bob Morealle "We Got It!" and after all the years of struggle and hardship, we deserve every centimeter of it.
