Michael Cusimano

With sad hearts we announce that Cardinal Newman lost one of it’s own. Michael Cusimano, courageously fought his illness and died peacefully surrounded by his family and friends on December 24th 2007. Michael, while only in grade 10, accomplished so much and touched so many people in such a short period of time.

Michael truly lived out the school motto ‘To Grow is to Change”. He saw that every opportunity as a possibility of growth and change into become a better student, leader and friend. While a member of student council at Cardinal Newman for the past two years, he became involved in all aspect of the school life from school dances to serving food at the Good Shepherd. Even though he was busy, he always found time for his love of sports, he especially loved being part of the Cardinal Newman sports tradition as a member of the volleyball and basketball teams. Michael truly exemplifies school spirit, his enthusiasm for life radiated through his actions, his words and of course his smile.

Michael touched the hearts of many during his years and his memory will live on. At this time, there are numerous events that are being planned to honour Michael and his legacy here at Cardinal Newman.

We as Easter people believe in the resurrection of Jesus and we know that Michael is now with the Lord in his heavenly paradise. What a most appropriate time to celebrate Michael than during our Easter season, a time of resurrection, a time of giving thanks. As a Cardinal Newman community, we will come together in prayer and celebrate Michael’s beautiful life with a memorial mass on Wednesday April 2nd 2008.

At the same time, Student Council found Valentines Day to be the best opportunity to express our love for Michael and celebrate his life with those in our school community. On February 14th, Student Council has planned a Teacher versus Student Charity Basketball Game with all proceeds will go to the Michael Cusimano Memorial Fund
